Leading professionals are calling for an end to water fluoridation and will be speaking at a public seminar in August, promoting community awareness of this contentious issue. The seminar is being organized by Gold Coast Water Watch Citizens' Action Group, a not-for-profit community group dedicated to raising awareness in our community of the dangers associated with Fluoridation of our water supply.
The Queensland State Government now controls our water resources and intends to add fluoride chemicals (rated as S7 poison) and recycled sewage to our drinking water by December 2008.
( 2009 has now added fluoride just waiting for the recycled sewage )
Fluoride in our drinking water like it or not
It is important to note that there is a naturally occurring fluoride in some foods that is beneficial to health. The pharmacists would have us believe that the fluoride by-products from Aluminum Smelters and other companies, are as safe as naturally occurring fluoride. However, this is not the case. The former is an assimilative nutrient, the latter is a insidious poison!
The fluoridation chemicals proposed are waste products from phosphate fertilizer plants. They contain arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury, radium and polonium.
No toxicological studies have been done on these industrial grade chemicals. Fluoride is now also used in the production of some common foods, beverages and pharmaceuticals and no studies have been done in Australia to determine overall ingested amounts of fluoride once water and food stuffs are added together.
Fluorosis (fluoride poisoning) causes brittle bones and hip fractures, impaired thyroid function, lower intelligence (it is a neurotoxin) and bone cancer in boys.
Babies face a greater risk and baby formulas should not be mixed with fluoridated water to avoid poisoning, as babies' water intake per body weight is far higher than that of adults.
Most countries have rejected fluoridation and the scientific community does not, and will not, know all of the toxic agents and carcinogens that may be able to make it through the indirect reclaimed water process (sewage recycling) to drinking water. Also, there is no technology to detect them.
Fluoridation is mass medication without controlled dosage and without our consent.
There is mounting evidence that fluoridation has the potential to cause more harm than good. Some key points include:
- Fluoride is not an essential nutrient (NRC 1993 and IOM 1997). No disease has ever been linked to a fluoride deficiency.
- Humans can have perfectly good teeth without fluoride. Fluoridation is not necessary. Most Western European countries are not fluoridated and have experienced the same decline in dental decay as the US which does.
- Fluoridation's role in the decline of tooth decay is in serious doubt. The largest survey ever conducted in the US (over 39,000 children from 84 communities) by the National Institute of Dental Research showed little difference in tooth decay among children in fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities (Hileman 1989).
- Where fluoridation has been discontinued in communities from Canada, the former East Germany, Cuba and Finland, dental decay has not increased but has actually decreased.
- Fluoride is a cumulative poison. On average, only 50% of the fluoride we ingest each day is excreted through the kidneys. The remainder accumulates in our bones, pineal gland, and other tissues. If the kidney is damaged, fluoride accumulation will increase, and with it, the likelihood of harm.
- Fluoride has been shown to be mutagenic, cause chromosome damage and interfere with the enzymes involved with DNA repair in a variety of cell and tissue studies (Tsutsui 1984; Caspary 1987; Kishi 1993 and Mihashi 1996). Recent studies have also found a correlation between fluoride exposure and chromosome damage in humans (Sheth 1994; Wu 1995; Meng 1997 and Joseph 2000).
- Animal experiments show that fluoride accumulates in the brain and exposure alters mental behavior in a manner consistent with a neurotoxic agent (Mullenix 1995).
- The level of fluoride put into water (1 ppm) is up to 200 times higher than normally found in mothers' milk (0.005 – 0.01 ppm) (Ekstrand 1981; Institute of Medicine 1997). There are no benefits, only risks, for infants ingesting this heightened level of fluoride at such an early age (this is an age where susceptibility to environmental toxins is particularly high).
Once fluoride is put in the water it is impossible to control the dose each individual receives.
