GE Free

ecostore is proudly GE Free

GE has always been a huge concern to us, in fact way back in 2003 we were a Gold Sponsor of the Econation 2020 Campaign against lifting the moratorium on GE field trials in NZ.

None of our plant-based ingredients come from GE stock such as corn and wheat.

Despite the fact that there is a new cornstarch alternative to plastic we won’t use it because it comes from GE crops.

Is any use of GE justified? While we’re strongly against GE field trials, we agree with organisations like Greenpeace that there’s a place for the ethical development of GE in laboratories for the production of medicine such as insulin and for some cleaning product ingredients such as enzymes.

Enzymes - nature’s little helpers. The cleaning-grade enzymes used in our dishwasher detergents and Extra Clean laundry products are not GE organisms but do come from a laboratory-controlled process that utilises GE. Many eco-products use enzymes made this way because there are simply not enough naturally occurring enzymes to fill the demand.

Quick facts about enzymes:

  • Using enzymes saves on energy and raw material consumption.
  • They're readily biodegradable.
  • They're super-efficient cleaners and help reduce the number of chemicals needed to get similar results.
  • < 1% in formulation is all it takes to achieve excellent results.
  • They enable us to formulate safer dishwasher products with lower alkalinity.

Four ecostore products contain enzymes; our Dishwasher Powder, Auto Dish Tablets, Extra Clean Laundry Powder and Extra Clean Laundry Soaker.

You can read more about enzymes in our enzyme FAQs.
