Enzymes are proteins that consist of a sequence of amino acids, folded into a unique 3D structure that determines the function of the enzyme which means specific types of enzymes have specific uses.

There are 4 types of enzymes commonly used in cleaning products:

1. Protease: Proteases are effective on stains containing proteins such as milk, egg white, meat, blood and grass. They break down long proteins into smaller portions of amino acids, called peptides.

2. Amylase: Amylases are effective on stains containing starch such as rice, potato, gravy and ice cream. They break down starch chains into smaller sugar molecules.

3. Lipase: Lipases are effective on stains containing oils and fats.

4. Cellulase: Cellulases are used in laundry detergents to improve the condition of fabric. They can help to preserve the smooth surfaces and bright colours of fabric.

What are enzymes used for?
Enzymes are used in detergents to improve the cleansing power of detergents. They act as catalysts to help speed up the reactions between detergent particles and stains. 

How do they work?
Enzymes break down large, insoluble stains into smaller, more soluble pieces that can be more easily removed by surfactants and through mechanical action. Since they are not used up in the reaction, a small amount of enzymes can catalyse a large amount of reactions.
